2014년 9월 말, 우리나라 공군이 KF-16 자체 공격기를 몰고 공중급유를 받으면서 North Pole 미군 공군기지에 도착하였다. 우리 공군는 알래스카에서 Red Flag Alaska 훈련에 참가하였다.

알래스카는 8월에 오로라가 뜨나요? 페어뱅크스에서 8월달에는 볼 수 있지요? 8월달 오로라 여행을 계획해도 되나요? 등 ... 많은 질문을 벌써부터 해 오신다. 

남편은 8월 중순부터 오로라 사진을 촬영한 적이 있다. 사실 주위에서 늦은 밤에 오로라를 관찰한 일이 있다고 알려 주시고 신문 보도 자료등에서도 잘 나타나 있다. 지난 2011년 자료에는 8월초에도 오로라 활동이 활발했다고 한다.

According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute's Aurora Forecast, the sun sent a lovely dollop of radiation hurtling toward the Earth on Aug. 2, and it's likely to result in highly active aurora borealis displays high in the sky across much of Alaska, weather permitting of course. After dark tonight, Aug. 3, aurora will be visible in a band from Barrow in the north, to Bethel, Dillingham and Ketchikan in the south. The displays may continue on the night of Aug. 4 as well. The weather radar in Southcentral doesn't look very promising, but late-night sky watchers in the Interior and Southeast might have a chance. Read more from aurora forecasters, here.

Residents of Alaska's most populated regions are likely to miss out on the big light show headed earthward if atmospheric forecasters are right -- always a big if.

With the sun about to undergo a magnetic flip, University of Alaska physicists report that there has been a lot of activity on its flaming surface. A burst of solar storm-charged particles ejected days ago should collide with EarthEarth and set to collide with the atmosphere Thursday night.

That should trigger a good-size burst of northern lights.

"Weather permitting, active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Barrow to Anchorage and Juneau, and visible low on the horizon from King Salmon and Prince Rupert,'' the institute reports.

The problem for Southcentral Alaska is that the National Weather Service is predicting the sky will be full of clouds Thursday night. The clouds aren't supposed to start to break up until Friday night into Saturday, according to that agency. 

Clouds are supposed to begin lifting on Friday night or Saturday morning with sunny skies predicted for Saturday and mostly clear forecast from Saturday night through Sunday night.

Unfortunately, the institute says the light display may be fading by then. It might still be visible on the horizon from Anchorage, but the best of it may be over.

Still, there is some good news. The complete magnetic flip of the sun -- with the magnetic north pole becoming the south pole and vice versa -- is expected to take months. The flip happens once every 11 years, and typically it’s accompanied by increased aurora activity. The activity can be so intense it may affect radio transmissions and satellite communications in addition to prompting celestial light shows.

Those impacts should be minimal according to C. Alex Young, associate director for science in the heliophysics science division of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Young compared the amount of particles being flung into earth's atmosphere as part of the magnetic shift to hurricane season. Sometimes there are strong, large ejections; other times the ejections are rarer or low intensity. Big ones could affect communications, though only for those living close to the earth's magnetic poles. The last major power outage caused by solar particles occurred in Quebec when a hydropower grid went out for nine hours in 1989.

“The biggest (solar ejections) in history have happened on the way down from solar max,” Young said. “It's possible, but highly unlikely.”

Young said while it's impossible to know when the peak of the current solar maximum will occur, scientists predict will hit in the next few months or the beginning of next year. Young said it's worth noting that solar activity is often higher during the equinoxes, and that with both the fall equinox and solar maximum overlapping, those living in northern latitudes can expect serious aurora activity in the next month.

Weather permitting, of course.

이번 주말 오로라는 어떨까? ... 벌써부터 기대가 된다. 보통은 오로라 예보 2-4 정도에서도 화려하게 천상의 커튼은 열렸다. 그런데 태양의 거대한 자기 폭풍이 몰아쳐 주말에는 예보가 6 까지 올라간다. 2016년 올해 ... 지금까지 최고의 오로라 예보일 것이다. 그래서 알래스카 언론도 주목하고 있다.

An active aurora borealis through the weekend could light up the night sky as far south as Washington and New York states.

A geomagnetic storm heading toward Earth was expected to reach the atmosphere starting Friday evening. The storm will vary in intensity through Saturday night, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s latest space weather forecast.

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is also forecasting an active aurora over the weekend, peaking Saturday night.

Viewing the aurora is dependent on dark, clear skies, so seek out an area away from light pollution and check your local weather forecast.

In Anchorage and the greater South central region, the forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies and scattered rain showers. But there will be breaks in the clouds, so aurora viewing is still possible, said Kimberly Hoeppner, meteorologist with the NWS Alaska region office.

On Friday morning, NOAA upgraded the storm advisory from minor to moderate and issued a minor storm watch for Sunday.

“Aurora may be visible as low as New York to Wisconsin to Washington state,” the update said.

9월과 10월에 뜨는 오로라는 아름답다. 특히 도심에서 화려하게 떠오르는 천상의 커튼은 여행객들에게 최고의 선물이 된다. 도시의 불빛과 오로라가 잘 조화를 이루기 때문일 것이다. 아울러, 호수나 강이 얼지 않아서 물 위에 뜬 오로라가 반사될 때 ... 정말 화려하고 아름답다. 인간의 단어로 어떻게 그 현상을 설명할 수 있을까?

그동안 오로라를 찍었던 사진과 자료를 정리하던 차에 몇 장의 옛날 사진 (어떤 사진은 선물로 받은 것도 있고, 지인들로부터 카톡으로 전해 받은 사진도 있다.) 들을 발견한다. 아래 사진들 중에서 한 장은 내 카톡 (id: alaska101, 알래스카의 향기) 사진이기도 하다. 

9월과 10월, 오로라

(알래스카 페어뱅크스 여행)

알래스카 페어뱅크스는 오로라를 잘 볼 수 있는 천혜의 요건을 갖추고 있다. 

그 첫번 째가 오로라 예보의 중심선 축선상에 놓여 있다. 오로라 대역은 페어뱅크스에서 더 북쪽으로 올라간다고 잘 볼 수 있는 것도 아니고, 남쪽으로 더 내려가면 볼 확률은 더 적어진다. 

두 번째, 페어뱅크스 주변 외곽은 칠흙과 같이 어둡다. 시야가 넓게 트인 장소, 깨끗한 청정 하늘 ... 자연환경이 뒷받침하고 있다. 

세 번째, 페어뱅크스 인구가 32,000 여 명 밖에 안되지만, 국제공항 (FAI) 를 갖추고 있다. 그래서 일본 여행객들은 겨울철에 일본에서 페어뱅크스까지 직항을 개설하여 이곳을 즐겨 찾는다. 중국도 오로라 여행객들이 많아 최근에 앵커리지까지는 직항을 운행할 정도이다. 요즘은 대만 여행객과 중국 여행객들이 겨울철에 페어뱅크스 오로라를 보기 위해서 관광버스 몇 대를 동원하여 페어뱅크스 곳곳을 누빈다. 한국도 여름 한 철에 백야 관광객을 위해서 앵커리지까지만 직항을 운행한다. 

이제 세계적인 관광명소만 찾아다니던 여행의 패턴이 바뀌고 있다고 한다. 한국은 젊은 층을 중심으로 자유 여행 또는 오지 체험 등 다양한 여행을 계획한다고 한다. 바람직한 일이다. 

지난 몇 달동안 오로라 여행과 페어뱅크스 시내투어, 툰드라 대자연 ... 디날리국립공원 ... 북극권 (Arctic Circle, Coldfoot, Dalton Highway) 의 여행 등을 안내하면서 많은 보람을 느낀다. 사람이 만들어 놓은 조형물이 아니라 자연 그대로를 즐기고 기뻐하는 여행객을 만나서 ... 좋은 사람들 틈에서 내가 힐링이 되었다. 달의 기운이 약화되어 밤하늘에 별들이 더 총총히 빛나는 하늘에 오로라가 가장 활발히 활동하는 3월달... 이곳 알래스카 페어뱅크스를 찾는 여행객들에게 더 큰 즐거움이 될 것이다.

요즘 오로라에 대한 질문을 많이 받는다.

"3월달에 오로라가 뜨나요?

"4월달에는 오로라가 어때요?"

"3월달, 4월달에도 오로라를 볼 수 있어요?"

5월에도 오로라 관측이 가능한가요?

결론적으로 ...

3월, 9월달에 선명한 오로라를 가장 잘 볼 수 있다.

오로라는 8월 말부터 4월 말경까지 볼 수 있다.

그러나, 8월 중순과 5월 초까지도 오로라가 관측되었다는 기록은 있다.
